The rule of thirds is a concept in video and film production which the frame is divided into nine imagery sections. This creates reference points which act as a guide for framing the image.

Points of interest should occur at 1/3 or 2/3 of the way up (across), rather than the centre.
The rule of thirds is a theory that if you place the points of interest in the intersections, the photo will become more balanced.

Some studies have shown that people view a photo leading from the top left down through the primary optical area, down to the terminal area in the bottom right. The primary optical area is an the main focus of the image whereas the terminal area is the last thing a persons eyes views.
